| Robotic warfare? Inevitable or No Way? | | |
Staff | Bradley | Mar 20, 2005 7:03pm | | As I read more and more about where AI, robotics, and materials science are going (lighter, stronger, etc.) I cannot help but think that at some point in the next 30 years, we won't be fighting our own wars hand-to-hand... Do you agree or disagree? Why? |

In aviation combat, we've long exceeded the ability to keep pilots conscious, and probably living.
Ground combat still has a way to go, in general, especially urban conflicts, where there is significant intelligence required in IFF. No doubt recent conflicts have paved the way for augmented systems. I think we're a long way away from largely stand-alone warfare, but if multiple operators could effectively control a single unit, the short term (< 5 yrs) could show significant inroads. |

So far, AI systems at best only perform as well as human operators and therefore have not been deemed a useful replacement. |

Ultimately, though, the point of warfare is either to control land or people. Land must be controlled by at least a temporary human occupation, and people must be controlled in the most extreme circumstances by threat of death. Unless those things change, I believe there will never be a completely "robotic" war (no human interaction/casualty). |

America has remote controlled tanks, would be easy to control from a loooong way off, just send in the remote controll tanks once they drop in price from $400,000 each! (they are small but can takeout many people) they are sick little things it's nasty..but less loss of life 9only one side does the dying....
the poor side. |
